Get Ready to Rock: 2010 Clovis Music Festival September 8-12
From Norman Petty’s “Mood Indigo” to his recordings of Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Fireballs, Roy Orbison, Buddy Knox, Bobby Vee and many others, there is a magical, musical legacy that happened right here in Clovis, New Mexico, a city “built on rock and roll.”
The Clovis Music Festival is excited to expand its horizons in 2010 with a show that covers three decades of classic American rock and roll: Starship starring original lead singer Mickey Thomas will headline September 9th. With 10 platinum and gold records to their credit spanning more than 20 years Starship’s show will feature all of their memorable hits like “Sara,” “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” “Jane,” and of course “We Built This City,” in addition revisiting the legendary catalog of Jefferson Airplane, the group that started it all for Starship!
Bobby Vee’s classic early 60’s recordings in the Norman Petty Studio cemented his special relationship to Clovis and the legacies of both Buddy Holly & Norman Petty. A relationship that continues to this day. Back by popular demand in 2010 is the Legendary Bobby Vee family & friends. With 38 chart hits in all Billboard magazine called Bobby “one of the top ten most consistent chart-makers of all time!” Songs like “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “Rubber Ball,” “Devil or Angel,” and “More Than I Can Say” are just a few of Bobby’s international multi-million sellers! Along with his band The Killer Vees they have been a festival favorite over the years helping to build what it has become today.
With seven top-40 hits and three gold records Brian Hyland is one of the classic voices of early pop rock’n roll. “Sealed with a Kiss” and teen-pop anthem “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie, Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” are just a few of his classic records. Together Bobby & Brian will perform a rockin’ tribute to the Legendary Buddy Holly!
Nick named the “CLOWN princes of Rock’n Roll” by Allan Freed, The Coaster’s classic harmonies, dances and crazy stage antics breathed life into classic Leiber & Stoller songs like: “Charlie Brown”, “Yakaty Yak.” “Love Potion No. 9” and many more. A member since the mid 1960’s Billy Richards has kept this legacy alive to this day and his group puts on a show like none other.
Kevin Montgomery & Johnny Rogers brought the house down in 2009 with their tribute to the music of Kevin’s dad Bob Montgomery and Buddy Holly. Infectious harmonies, a warm sense of humor and the classic ‘Buddy & Bob’ as none else can do.
The ‘Originators of Rock and Roll’ are just what the name implies! Some of the most talented performers in the country tipping their hats to the guys that started it all! This year watch and listen to the music of Jackie Wilson, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and the King of Rock and Roll, ELVIS! All backed by The Killer Vees in a show that is non-stop hits, dancing and audience participation.
Other events will include tours of The Norman Petty Studios and the Norman and Vi Petty Rock and Roll Museum, a symposium by The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, a “Kids Rock” Rock and Roll Assembly at a local elementary school, a Rockin’ Motorcycle Rally hosted by High Plains Harley Davidson, the 13th Annual Desert Cruzers Run to Hillcrest Car Show and FanFare and to finish off the weekend festivities, a Rockin’ Gospel Sing-a-long on Sunday morning.
We are also excited to announce that the internationally acclaimed, award winning musical “The Buddy Holly Story” will be a new addition to the event line-up. The Buddy Holly Story is on another leg of their international tour and is excited to make a stop in Clovis during the Clovis Music Festival, where it all began! The Clovis Music Festival weekend is all of this and much, much more, it’s the concert event of the year and The Clovis Music Festival continues to build this city on Rock and roll!

About the Norman & Vi Petty Rock and Roll Museum:
Clovis’ rich musical heritage is showcased in Clovis’ own Norman and Vi Petty Rock and Roll Musuem. Located downstairs from the Chamber of Commerce at 105 E. Grand Ave, the Museum hosts a wide variety of memorabilia from the early days of rock and roll. Come see how a record was made, how some of the most dynamic rock & roll songs were recorded, and learn about some of rock music’s greatest legends, all in the same place!
The Museum is designed to complement the Norman Petty Studios on 7th Street where musicians such as Buddy Holly, Buddy Knox, Roy Orbison and other early rock & roll greats recorded their hits. The entrance to the Museum features an oversized 50’s Fender Stratocaster – the guitar that Buddy Holly made popular.
The Museum displays feature working equipment from the studios, including the original mixing board used during Buddy Holly’s recordings. Other items include memorabilia pertaining to the Norman Petty Studios and to the Pettys themselves, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their lives and careers. Even experts will discover something new, with never-before-seen artifacts and interesting back stories!
The construction of the Museum is also unique. A recreation of two of the Studio’s rooms, as well as diner booths, lots of neon, and era-specific details will make visiting the Museum a uniquely fun learning experience!
About the Norman Petty Studios
The "Clovis Sound" made popular by such greats as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, was created and recorded in Clovis at the Norman Petty 7th Street Studio. Although it is no longer an active recording studio, the original equipment still resides there, and a visit will take you back in time to the grand days of rock 'n roll. Petty's golden ears helped dozens of popular country, rock, and pop musicians who recorded at the Norman Petty Studios-Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Buddy Knox, Waylon Jennings, Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs, Charlie Phillips, Jimmy Bowen, Johnny Duncan, Carolyn Hester, Chita Rivera, Brad Maule and many others.
Inside the studios the large dangling microphones, the old control board with big round knobs, the clocks on the walls, the Coke machine, and the furnishings look much as they did in the late fifties when Buddy Holly came to record. Relive the Norman Petty legacy with a tour of the studio, meet The Roses and Tollettes (back-up singer for Buddy). Hear original music recordings that will take you back in time. This is a place you will never forget and treasure for the rest of your life. The studios are located at 1313 W. 7th St. Tours must be booked well in advance, please call the Chamber at 575.763.3435 for details
